Item: HMS Wave aground off Westcott's Quay, St Ives, 1952

Description: This pictures the drama of the recscue by breeches buoy of the crew of HMS Wave off Westcotts Quay, St Ives. Built in 1924, HMS Wave was an Algerine class fleet minesweeper on Fishery Protection Service when she anchored close to St Ives on Tuesday 30 September 1952. Her anchor chain parted in a force 7 to 8 gale early at 0530 hours and she was driven ashore at Westcott's Quay, drying out on the ebb tide. On the next tide she was thrown against the rocks and holed at 1430 hours. Most of her crew were taken off by breeches buoy, the tripod being steadied by a large group of volunteers. She was winched off by the boom defence ships Barbastel and Barnaby on Thursday 2 October and moored at Smeaton's Pier. Her hull was stained with fuel oil which escaped when she was holed on the rocks. She was repaired with timber and cement patches before being towed by the tug Freeboater to be rebuilt at Devonport, on Tuesday 7 October. She was scrapped in 1962.
