Item: Eddystone Lighthouse
Description: Here on Eddystone Rocks, Devon a lighthouse was first built in 1696. The lighthouse in the picture is the fourth on the site, designed by James Douglass and its lamps first lit in 1882. It was automated in 1982. It is 49 metres high; its white light flashes every 10 seconds. This should be visible over a distance of 41 kilometres. The keeper's normal duty spanned six months, but this could be extended if the weather was too poor for the relief keeper to be landed.
