Identification
Item: Metal from the sunken ship 'Vinovia' at Penzance Harbour
Description: This photograph appears in The Cornishman on 11 April 1957 with the caption "Metal from the sunken ship 'Venovia' (sic) on the quayside at Penzance after it had been recovered from the seabed". There are no records, however, of sunken ships with this name in the 1950s, so this probably relates to a war loss in 1917. Lloyds List records the loss of 'Venovia' but this has been hand corrected to 'Vinovia' which seems to be the ship's proper name. The SS 'Vinovia' was a cargo ship that was returning from New York but due to rudder problems had become separated from its convoy on 19 December 1917. Eight nautical miles south of the Wolf Rock, Cornwall, it was sunk by a torpedo from a U-Boat with the loss of nine crew. The rest of the ship's crew having abandoned ship were later rescued by patrol vessels.
Condition: Fair - tape residue along top right and bottom reverse edge; dog-eared corners; slightly discoloured.
