Item: The Old Pier at Newlyn
Description: Overlooking the Old Pier at Newlyn, one of many images of the Penzance area taken by Robert Preston and contained within an album. Overlooking the Old Pier at Newlyn on a quiet day. There is a three masted steamer and eight small rowing boats in the water. Two wooden spars are propped against the harbour wall. The building on the right is the Fishermen's Rest which was demolished in the early 21st century. Fishing nets are draped over the harbour wall which is obviously well maintained. The lady on the left is dressed in her working clothes, the gentlemen in bowler hats, whilst the boys on the beach have obviously been in the water. The beach looks to be shingly, perhaps the debris from the quarry behind the photographer.
