Photograph album

Acc.no: PEZPH : 2005.153.4

Identification

Item: Public Buildings - Penzance completed in 1867 by the Public Buildings Company.

Description: On the inside cover of the album is the inscription ''D.A. Cooper, 12 Crundale Crescent, Llanishen, Cardiff. Once of Trewellard and of Highfield, St Just'. In top left corner is a diamond shaped sticker which reads 'R.H. Preston, Photographer, Penzance'. Note the flat roof, the fountain in the forecourt, flower bed, fencing, gates and grass to the left side - seemingly a summer's day with the windows open and the roller blinds drawn. There is a path and wall all around the building. Above the top step is the largest piece of granite ever quarried. The gate and entrance to the left is to the Royal Geological Museum of Cornwall. The centre incorporates Alverne Hall and St John's Concert Hall on the ground floor which had a balcony with the stage the opposite end to the Hall as it is now. The Natural History Museum was housed in the left of the building with the Council Chamber, Municipal Offices with Police entrance to the side. Various uses were made of the basement, including, prison cells and a reading room. Note also the fencing on the other side of the road which appears to be above the level of the garden.
