A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Item: Bunkers Hill, St Ives

Description: Bunkers Hill, St Ives. Bunkers Hill leads from the bottom of Fore Street to Porthmeor Square. It is named after the 1775 battle of the American War of Independence. Formerly it was called Bolton Street after the Duke of Bolton, the landlord. In 1906 4 cottages in Bunkers Hill and Bailey’s Lane sold for £300. Mr Tanner, the basket maker, used the building on the left in the early 20th century. Further up was Brooking Williams Seine Company cellar which was replaced by the Fore Street (Primitive Methodist) Chapel Sunday School in 1922.
