Identification

Item: Flower boxes from the Isles of Scilly being checked in for delivery to Birmingham via Great Western Railway

Description: This may well have been one photograph in a series to illustrate the efficiency of the Great Western Railway in transporting consignments of delicate blooms from the extreme south-west of the United Kingdom, the Isles of Scilly, to mainland markets. A trestle table has been set up on which to do the paperwork and the picture suggests that the flower grower, William Trevellick and another are handing over the flowers for loading onto the train. The location is the far end of the 'up' platform where it had joined the old railway station by the harbour and the goods sheds are from that period. On the opposite or street side of the large wall there were large advertisement hoardings which have been captured on photograph. The gentleman on the right sporting a bowler hat and a daffodil suggests that it could be Spring or even St David's Day. The presence of a staff of seven and the immaculately clean ground suggest that it was no ordinary day. The shadows suggest that it is afternoon.
