Item: Brake van off the rails at Penzance Railway Station
Description: The scene on Platform 4 of Penzance Railway station when, the track made slippery by fish water, ex Penzance Brake Van 06.13.20 skidded and struck the buffers. The body of the vehicle left the chassis. This was a common problem as the wheels of the following train would not be able to grip the track because of the (oily) fish water. Late in the 1930s two loading banks were built alongside Platform 4 to handle fish, flowers, milk and perishables. This photograph was taken in the early 1950s so obviously the problem did not go away. Ieft to right : Morris Commercial; sign saying parking for GWR vehicles only; 1948 Hillman Imp Minx, JLP 722; canopies.
