Item: Sevenstones lightship
Description: The Sevenstones lightship is moored off the Seven Stones Reef, approximately 10 miles north east of the Isles of Scilly. By the 1980s the vessel was unmanned. In the 20th century it was usual for a lightship to have a crew of eleven consisting of a master and six ratings with a master and three ratings ashore. The masters were changed every month whilst the rest of the crew served a month afloat followed by two weeks of shore leave. The crews were qualified seamen who had usually served at least two years as a deckhand. He would start here as a general seaman before being promoted to Fog Signal Driver and Lamplighter. After 15 to 20 years, he could become a Master.
