Item: Part of the Pilgrims' Way, St Michaels Mount
Description: These ancient steps, unearthed and renovated in the 1950s on St Michael's Mount, are the Pilgrims' Steps. St Michael's Mount was part of the Pilgrim's Way from the continent and across England and Cornwall. Pilgrims would often visit Cornwall and the Mount en route to San Compestello. The age of the steps is uncertain, but the Mount was a destination for pilgrims, whose devotions were encouraged by an indulgence granted by Pope Gregory in the 11th century. In 2013 they form part of the climb to the Castle and Church.
