Item: Deny's Matthews as a young boy, hiding behind a Flatpot Cabbage, outside Bal Farm Cottages, Gulval.
Description: Deny's is the son of the late Dick Matthews of Parc Webben Farm, Gulval. Former Mayor of Penzance, Denys was about 6 years old at the time. The cabbage was grown by Bernard Gribble in his garden at Bal Farm Cottages, just below Gulval Church. Flatpol cabbages were grown as winter feed for cattle, but were also popular for making soups and broth.
