Item: Land Rover being loaded on to Scillonian I
Description: A Land Rover is being lifted by crane on to the Scillonian l. Motor vehicles were bought from a mainland garage - Taylor's Garage being a supplier - and brought back to the mainland for essential repairs. The vehicle is suspended from the derrick in a sling over the hold. The spreader, or cross bar, is the same one as was used to lift the cattle boxes. There looks to be a wire mesh cargo net under each wheel. On deck, two stevedores and two of the crew guide the vehicle down to her stowage position on top of the hatchway. Even a Land Rover was too big to go down into the hold and would have been carried as deck cargo lashed onto the hatch cover.
