Item: Five men harvesting potatoes
Description: Five unidentified men harvesting the early potato crop possibly at Little Rosemorran, Gulval. Potatoes were harvested by hand in small fields which were inaccessible to horses or tractors. The man in front would throw the potatoes out with a square point Cornish shovel and wore a bag round his waist to protect his trousers. The potatoes in these small sheltered fields were the first to be harvested usually in the second week of May. The varieties grown were May Queens, Duke of York, and Home Guard. The seed potatoes were grown in Scotland and Lincolnshire and would be sent down by rail in early autumn, the put to shoot on benches in barns, each potato standing upright until planted in January weather permitting.
