Identification
Item: Cauliflower harvest
Description: Two men and two women cutting and packing cauliflower. Packing took place in the corner of a field - until legislation declared this unhygienic - into baskets or a horse and cart, then tipped against the hedge to be sorted and packed into crates. Until the Second World War, the box wood to make the collapsible crates was imported from Sweden. When the wood became unattainable, the boxes (shown here) were constructed of much thinner plywood and stapled together. The man in the duffel coat in the foreground of the photograph is tying cord around the crate to give it more protection when handling.
