Item: Potato Harvesting, possibly on the Pleming Farm, Long Rock, Cornwall.
Description: Five men facing the camera holding baskets of potatoes. Another man and a horse stand behind them. This photograph of potato harvesting is thought to have been taken on Mr William Rowe's farm 'Pleming' at Long Rock. The man second from the right was Garfield Stevens aged about 38 at the time. The other men are unidentified. During the war, all potatoes were sent away in hessian sacks to the Potato Marketing Board. After the war, the buyers were more particular about the quality of the potatoes they were buying and so the first earlys were sent away in these style of 14lb chip baskets so they arrived in the markets in an unblemished condition.
