Item: The Traute Sarnow hitting the rocks at Gurnard's Head, a spectator is on the cliff on the bottom right hand side of the picture
Description: The Traute Sarnow was a 200 ton German cargo vessel which was wrecked off Gurnard's Head on 25 July 1954 whilst en route from Cardiff to Ostend. All six members of the crew were rescued but the vessel was badly holed and a salvage operation was considered impossible. The ship broke up within a matter of days and for a short while she became a tourist attraction. This photograph shows the wreck in deteriorating weather lying nearly parallel with the shore. Her back appears broken as her bow section is listing more noticeably to port than the stern. Her hatch and decks are open to the sea and heavy seas are breaking over her. Her lifeboat now lies precariously on the port side of her stern while a lone witness on the cliff appears dressed for heavy weather.
