Identification
Item: St Clare Flats, Penzance
Description: Controversially, several rather attractive cottages were demolished to make way for this development at St Clare. Prospect Place was the first phase in 1955. It consisted of 42 apartments centred around a landscaped courtyard. Yards at the back provided storage and washing lines. The scheme attracted national attention and thousands of people from all over the country came to inspect the building before it was occupied. The photograph shows the Planning Department preparing an exhibition to accompany the event. Pendarves Flats to the south and St Clare Flats to the north were completed in 1961, the architects Cowell, Drewitt and Wheatley being involved. In 2012 these buildings have stood the test of time, look attractive and are fully occupied.
