Description: The archway leading to the Rose Garden at the former West Cornwall School, St Clare, Penzance. In 1884 the West Cornwall College, a Methodist School for Girls, opened in Chapel Street, Penzance, where many buildings, including a gymnasium, were used for most of the school's life. In 1929, York House at St Clare became its home and in 1939 a new block was built for Juniors. This was demolished to build the new fire station in the early 1970s. After the school's closure in 1967, the buildings were taken over by what became known as Penwith District Council. This picture of the entrance to the Rose Garden is one of a charming series of postcards taken to show the quality of school life. These postcards would certainly have been sent by the boarders to their relatives. It is believed that the site is that of the legendary Chapel of St Clare and the stones in the picture are on site in 2011.
