Item: The Greenmarket in the 19th century
Description: Photograph of a coloured engraving by J S Prout of Greenmarket, Penzance and was printed and published by J P Vibert in 1831 which is PEZPH 1999.217. Left to right are two figures with baskets by a raised, possible drained, area; an inn with a raised storey; a shopping arcade (Polkinghorne) with a stall outside; the market cross from which Penzance Borough extended half a mile was moved from here in September 1829; scrolled roof edging; woman fetching water from the chute; oil or gas lamp.
