Item: The study of the Headmistress at the former West Cornwall School, St Clare, Penzance
Description: In 1884 the West Cornwall College, a Methodist School for Girls, opened in Chapel Street Penzance where many buildings, including a gymnasium, were used for most of the school's life. In 1929, York House at St Clare became its home and in 1939 a new block was built for Juniors. This was demolished to build the new fire station in the early 1970s. After the school's closure in 1967, the buildings were taken over by what became known as Penwith District Council. This picture of the the Headmistress'e study in York House, is one of a charming series of postcards taken to show the quality of school life. Note the piano and the unclutttered scene. The College provided a broad education including commercial subjects like book-keeping. It is believed that the site is that of the legendary Chapel of St Clare.
