Item: The dormitory for junior pupils at York Lodge, the former West Cornwall College, St Clare, Penzance

Description: In 1884 the West Cornwall College, a Methodist School for Girls, opened in Chapel Street Penzance where many buildings, including a gymnasium, were used for most of the school's life. In 1929, York House at St Clare became its home and in 1939 a new block was built for Juniors. This was demolished to build the new fire station in the early 1970s. After the school's closure in 1967, the buildings were taken over by what became known as Penwith District Council. This picture of a junior dormitory in York Lodge built in 1945, is one of a charming series of postcards taken to show the quality of school life. Residential students often had parents working abroad or from the Isles of Scilly. It is believed that the site is that of the legendary Chapel of St Clare.
