Item: Broccoli harvest, c.1930
Description: An unknown group of men and children, probably taken in the 1930s, in front of a wagon with four large rear wheels known as a dead wagon. It dates from about 1900 without springs on the axles. The wagon is loaded with large wicker crates of broccoli. The crates held about 36 and were packed with the leaves folded over the curds to protect them when the crate was full. It was covered with straw and laced down with twine. The crates went out of use in the late 1930s when collapsible wooden crates came into use.
