Identification

Item: The SS Busby foundering on rocks near Pendeen Watch in 1894

Description: The 2070 ton steam ship Busby was launched in 1894 at Stockton for Ropner of West Hartlepool for trading to India. She sailed from Newport on 22 June 1894 with coal for Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, from where she would steam to Bombay. At 0730 on 23 June 1894 she was off Trevose with a course set to pass clear of the Longships. Godrevy was sighted at 0930. At 1000 she reduced her speed; she grounded under Pendeen cliffs at 1100. Twelve of the crew and a dog were landed by breeches buoy while fourteen rowed off in one of the ship’s lifeboats. The cargo was shovelled overboard. She was refloated on 24 June and towed off by two tugs on 16 July but she sank in poor weather. The Captain said there was fog; the lifeboat crew who attended the scene did not see it.
