Identification

Item: Entertainment marquee on Penzance Promenade in 1907

Description: "The Hut" is a marquee which would be erected here every summer for live entertainment, later cinema. The land was given by the Bolithos for the purpose of recreation for the people of Penzance. The group of people clustered around the lamp-post could be the artists or children, posing for a publicity shot. This very poor quality picture shows in the background, Alexandra Terrace and St Mary's Church of England School built in 1896. After a few years of lobbying, the Grand Pavilion was built on this site in 1911, opened in 1912 and in 2012 provides housing, a laundry, bowling alley and an amusement arcade. It was one of the first buildings in Penzance to benefit from electricity. The bell tower in 2014 houses the bell to summon the children to school.
