Identification
Item: The nadir of the Ash Wednesday storm
Description: A second high tide breaches the foundations and water cascades underneath the promenade opposite Captain's Row. I believe there was a second promenade out of sight and running alongside the one in the picture. Nothing can be done until the tide recedes. The area was evacuated and emergency measures swung into action. Under the control of the Borough Surveyor, Peter Tresidder, repairs were effected so that Penzance would be open for the summer season. This is one of a series of photographs of the Richard Brothers commissioned by the Council to record the event. The Borough Surveyour commissioned E Ford to take a separate set of photographs.
