Description: The SS Lyonnesse, going astern from the extension pier (not in shot), Penzance, on a summer excursion to the Isles of Scilly. The forecastle-head is full of passengers (which would not be permitted today) while the crew are still recovering her bow mooring line. The Lyonnesse was built at Hayle in 1889 for the West Cornwall Steamship Company to work in conjunction with their smaller steamer, the Lady of the Isles, on the Penzance to St Mary's service. She carried 340 passengers in the summer, 285 in the winter. She was sold to a salvage contractor, Henry Thomas Ensor, in Ireland in 1918 and was broken up by Thomas Ward Ltd of Hayle in September 1928.
