Identification

Item: Osprey sailing dingies racing in Mounts Bay in 1949 with tthe Western Union fleet in the background

Description: This is one of a series of photographs taken for the local newspapers. It was taken between 30 June and 4 July 1949 during the visit of the Western Union Fleet. In the years leading up to the Second World War, two classes of dinghies raced in Mounts Bay. The white sail boats favoured by the Mounts Bay Sailing Club, Marazion, were 'Jolly Boats' while the red sail dinghies favoured by the Penzance Sailing Club were West of England Red Wings. Both were classic designs of Uffa Fox and thoroughbred sailing craft, but were relatrively costly to build and expensive to maintain. Some time after the war, the Mounts Bay Club adopted the Osprey as a more modern sailing hull which was more easily affordable and less costly to maintain. On their sails they sported a winged letter 'O' as their class symbol, together with their registered number.
