Identification
Item: The Vert Prarial
Description: The Vert Prarail was a modern, well equipped motor trawler. Her loss was believed due to navigational error. The night of 13 March 1956 was clear with a moderate wind as the Vert Prarial sailed from Brixham for the Trevose Grounds. At 0500 hours on 14 March a weak SOS was received by SS Peninnis, the former Scillonian ferry. At 0545 a beachcomber on Porth Chapel beach reported the incident to Tol Pedn coastguards. Just before 1800 hours she ran ashore at Wireless Point just east of Porthcurno, capsized and all 17 crew were lost in the surf. The bodies of the entire Breton crew, including Skipper Jean Baptiste Coppin, were taken home to Dieppe from Penzance on the trawler Gai Floreal.
