Brief Description: A view of the Gurnard's Head Hotel from the unmade driveway. An unidentified man stands in the doorway and another man stands with a horse and cart facing the camera. The proprietor at the time was R. Berryman whose name appears on the outside of the building, which dates the image to 1919. Details from Pigot's 1823, 1830, 1844 and Kelly's 1873, 1883, 1893, and 1919; West Penwith Resources-Public Houses and Wikipedia. The Gurnard's Head appears to have traded as the Gurnard's Arms Hotel between 1873 and 1883. Thomas Eddy ran the Gurnard's Head Hotel between 1891 and 1893; Richard Berryman in 1919; Thomas Bater in 1963 and Roy and Joy Kell took over in 2000. The headland was popular with tourists during Queen Victoria's reign. The freehold of the Gurnard's Head Inn was put up for sale by auction on Thursday 27 May, 1880 at the Western Hotel, Penzance. The inn was part of the 'Nicholls Tenement" and also rights of common on Treen Cliff and 12 acres of fertile arable lands and improvable crofts and moors". The reserve price was £975 but the highest bid was £730. The property remained unsold.
