A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

A rare portrait of Harry Penhaul himself, this image accompanied an article in The Cornishman after Harry spotted and pursued escaped convict Cyril Michael Bond. Bond had escaped Dartmoor prison and hid out in Penzance for several days before his dramatic discovery by Harry on Penzance sea front.

Description

This print is part of Penlee House, Gallery & Museum’s current spring exhibition, ‘Harry Penhaul: Life Through a Lens’. A one-room show featuring around 30 informal portrait photographs of the local community in the 1950s by this well-known local press photographer. This latest one-room show features some previously unseen images of life in and around west Cornwall in the 1950s, alongside some of his most well-loved images. All the photographs featured in this exhibition are available to buy as prints online.
