Item: The wreck of the "Mando", aground on the Golden Ball Bar, Isles of Scilly in January 1955
Description: The Panamanian SS Mando bound from Hampton Roads, USA, to Rotterdam with 9000 tons of coal was wrecked in fog at 2030 hours on 21 January 1955 on the Golden Ball Bar, Isles of Scilly. Her Captain was Syras Svoronos and she weighed 7176 tons. The lighthouse keepers on Round Island called St Mary's lifeboat, Cunard. Because of poor visibility, the ship's crew made a bonfire of tar barrels on deck to help the lifeboat find them. With Coxswain Matt Lethbridge she took off all 24 crew and towed the two ship's lifeboats into St Mary's.
