Item: The wreck of the SS 'Scheldt' in Pendeen Cove.
Description: A photograph of the wreck of the SS 'Scheldt' on 23 June 1890 in dense fog at Pendeen Cove. The wreck is between the Three Stone Oar (Wra) and the cliff on the north side of Pendeen Watch. The 'Scheldt' of Cardiff was from Newport to Bordeaux with coal. The 17 crew landed safely at Portheras Cove in their own lifeboats. The 'Scheldt' of 1090 gross tons was built in Bristol in 1884. The master's certificate was suspended for 6 months for failing to verify his course on approaching Land's End and failing to sound with the lead. Pendeen Lighthouse was not completed until 1900.
