Identification

Item: Wreck of the Suevic, White Star Line, on rocks at The Lizard 17 March 1907.

Description: The Suevic sailed from Australia with a cargo of wool, butter, wheat, frozen meat. She was stranded on The Lizard on 17 March 1907. All 456 passengers and crew were rescued by the Cadgwith, Lizard, Coverack and Porthleven lifeboats. The passengers' luggage and the cargo were unloaded into barges. On 2 April 1907 the bow was cut off with explosives and the ship was towed to Southampton where a new bow was built on. In 1929 the Suevic was sold to Norway and converted to the whale factory ship, Skyttern. She was sunk in 1942 to prevent her falling into German hands.
