Description: Stone faced Polwithen was built by William Bolitho before 1870 on land to the north of Alverton with extensive views over Mount's Bay. When he lost his sight in 1906 it was purchased by Clements Inn Safe Deposit and Contract Company and licensed as the Riviera Palace Hotel. The company developed Clements Road and Kings Road on the estate, leaving the original lodge at the corner to Alverton Road. The hotel was extended in 1908 and in 1916 by Oliver Caldwell. By 1917 it had closed. In 1918 it became the Penzance Church of England High School, in 1937 the St Clare School for girls owned by the Woodard Corporation, then the Bolitho School and in 2014 is the Gems Bolitho School.
