Identification
Item: An AF 211 Milnes-Daimler 28 hp bus, in Penzance Station yard, August 1906.
Description: GWR set up a bus service from Penzance to St Just on 16 May 1904 to test the viability of a train route. The terrain proved too problematic so a railway was never built. The bus is fitted with an early type closed body which is almost a replica of a railway coach and is finished in natural wood, with solid tyres. This double decker bus would have carried Royal Mail and accommodated between 20 and 30 passengers. It has the Holmans logo on the side of the bus, which was a firm of mining, shipping and general engineers with premises in St Just and (Market Jew Street) Penzance.
