A space for all

Built in 1865, as the home of the Branwell family. Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. It is also home to the Penzance Natural History and Antiquarian Society collection.

Evans, Fred McNamara

Evans is best known for his detailed head and shoulder studies of Newlyn’s fisherfolk. Some say fellow artists used Evans’s paintings as source material for their own work.

Biography

Fred McNamara Evans – 1859 – 1929

Frederick McNamara Evans was born in Westminster, London, on 7th September 1859. His birth certificate states that his father was also an artist.

McNamara Evans studied art at the Royal Institute Schools in London. He joined the growing colony of artists in Newlyn in the late 1880s, working mostly in watercolour.

He is best known for painting small head and shoulder portraits of local fisherman and women, capturing the character of his sitters in detailed watercolour studies.

He began exhibiting in 1886 and showed several works at the Royal Academy during the 1890s.

Little else is known about McNamara Evans, who died in Redinnick Terrace, Penzance, in 1929.
