Identification

Item: Penzance Fire Man with wooden cart in early 1900s

Description: A photograph of a fireman in uniform consisting of boots, mackintosh and brass helmet alongside a wooden cart with hose, marked PFB. There is a suggestion that the fireman might be 'old Davey' the Penzance watercress seller. The wagon appears similar to those used on the railways and is carrying hoses and buckets with a limited water supply in the raised tank, and could be pulled by men or mules. Water came from the reservoir at the top of Causeway Head or from the nearest stream or river.
