Item: The shipwreck of 'Pindos' at Chynalls Point, near Coverack in 1912
Description: 'Pindos' of Hamburg had discharged a cargo of coal in Chile and loaded nitrates bound for Falmouth, where she arrived on 1st February 1912. She left Falmouth for Hamburg on 10th February under tow of the German tug 'Ancona'. The wind freshened and she was driven onto Chynalls Point, half a mile south of Coverack. The Coverack lifeboat rescued her crew by breeches buoy. The 'Pindos' was built at Workington for London owners in 1890 and sold to Hamburg in 1896. An example of the discipline on board is recorded when she entered Falmouth shortly before the shipwreck. Although it was snowing, the mate sent 4 crew aloft to scrape and varnish the main royal yard. (At the top of the second mast from the front.)
