SUMMARY:Friends of Penlee Talk: David Haughton Art\, Life and The Cornish Landscape
DESCRIPTION:This talk will explore David Haughton’s life and career (1924-1991)\, notably his meticulously observed and rendered drawings\, paintings and etchings of the former mining town of St Just\, and his legacy as an inspirational teacher. Haughton drew creative inspiration from the West Penwith of Cornwall throughout his life: from his discovery of St Just in 1947 until he died in 1991. Haughton was also highly regarded for brightly coloured semi-abstract paintings based on grid structures and calligraphic forms made in the 1960s and ‘70s. The talk will contextualise Haughton’s work in relation to post-war British art and the ‘St Ives scene’\, and his friends and contemporaries\, including Prunella Clough\, Barbara Hepworth\, Rose Hilton\, Ben Nicholson\, John Wells and Bryan Wynter (to name but a few). \nDavid Haughton’s daughter\, Frances\, grew up in St Ives and Newlyn and now lives in Sussex. Her talk will coincide with Sansom & Co’s publication of David Haughton: Art\, Life and the Cornish Landscape in September 2026. Now semi-retired\, Frances’s career was in the visual arts\, crafts and public art. In 2018\, Penlee House Gallery & Museum organised a highly successful and popular exhibition\, David Haughton in St Just\, which revived interest in his work. The exhibition catalogue is now out of print. SUMMARY:Talk: Before Cryséde: Newlyn and the women who helped create an international silk company
DESCRIPTION:It has always seemed surprising to me that Cryséde Silks\, which\, in 1918\, should have originated in Newlyn – a village\, predominantly known for its fishing industry\, and situated far away from any major fashionable town or city. The company produced unique hand-designed and hand-made silk dresses\, which would be sold all over the world. \nJanet Axten has been researching the people and events that led up to the formation of Cryséde. She has looked at the expansion of the town due to the creation of the new piers in the 1880s\, and the opening of the Industrial Class; the newly established Arts and Crafts movement of the 1890s\, producing\, among other things\, fine copper and enamel ware. She has also identified the accomplishments of the painter Elizabeth Forbes\, who\, at the turn of the twentieth century\, encouraged a generation of fashionable and talented young women to attend the Forbes School of Painting. DESCRIPTION:Penlee House’s exhibition Harry Penhaul: Life through a Lens took us back to post-war Penwith. How did he choose his subjects? What makes his work so good? And how does this contrast with the work of photojournalists today? Greg Martin\, himself a photojournalist\, will talk about Penhaul’s way of working and how photojournalists go about telling stories today. \nAbout Greg Martin: I worked predominantly as a photographer for over 20 years in Cornwall – originally as a surf photographer and magazine photo editor\, and then for 10 years as a press photojournalist. In the end\, I was the only full-time staff photojournalist in Cornwall. SUMMARY:Lecture: Heroines in War
DESCRIPTION:Heroines in War: Women War Artists and the depiction of Women’s role in the Second World War with Catherine Wallace \nIn this lecture we look at some of the Women artists whose work was commissioned to depict subjects as varied as the bombed out buildings of London during the Blitz\, the evacuation of children from London\, the heroines of the various Women’s Auxillary Units including Air Transport\, Air Service\, Territorial Service\, as well as the many jobs women undertook in industry such as welding and vehicle fabrication; working in munition and camouflage factories including those in Cornwall. The work of the Women’s Land Army\, which was a considerable force during the Second World War\, was also captured by many artists\, including Ethel Gabain and Evelyn Dunbar. Women War artists were also sent abroad to record the release of prisoners from Belsen and the refugees in Germany\, including Doris Zinkeisen and Mary Kessell. DESCRIPTION:Timed to coincide with the Penlee House exhibition Lamorna Birch – A Painter Laureate\, this talk celebrates the life and work of Samuel John “Lamorna” Birch RA (1869–1955). A self-taught painter of pure landscape and founder of the Lamorna colony in West Cornwall\, Birch drew lifelong inspiration from the valley that gave him his name. \nThe exhibition title references Austin Wormleighton’s landmark 1995 biography\, A Painter Laureate. Austin\, a founding member and long-serving President of the Lamorna Society\, updated the book before his passing in 2019\, with the new edition published posthumously by his partner\, Jo Sunter. \nOn display are over 25 works from Austin’s personal collection.
